Why the Year Matters: the S1000R 2020-2023 Generation

What Sets This Generation Apart

The S1000R 2020-2023 is built around a complete 2021 restyle sharing the chassis and engine platform of the S1000RR sportsbike. Its 4-cylinder inline engine displaces 999 cc (bore x stroke: 80 x 49.7 mm), meets Euro 5 emissions standards, and produces 165 hp (121 kW) at 11,000 rpm with 114 Nm of torque at 9,250 rpm. Compared to the previous generation, this unit is approximately 5 kg lighter – a meaningful saving on a naked roadster of this size. The most visible break with the past is the switch from the asymmetric headlight to new symmetrical LED units, giving the bike a sharper, more aggressive naked look. One point to note: the S1000R does not use BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing system, which remains exclusive to the careneed S1000RR sportsbike.

Model Year Compatibility

The S1000R was unveiled at the end of 2020 and went on sale from 2021. The 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 model years share the same frame, the same bodywork geometry and the same plastic panels (side fairings, undertail, lateral covers). All templates on this page cover the full 2020-2023 run without any modification needed. The 2024+ update introduced bodywork changes that make it incompatible with these templates.

Not Sure Which Year You Have?

If your S1000R predates 2020, earlier generations have their own dedicated templates: see the S1000R 2017-2019 graphics kit or the S1000R 2013-2016 graphics kit depending on your year. Own the fully-faired version? The S1000RR 2019-2022 graphics kit is available on its own page. The full BMW range is listed under BMW graphics kits.

Off-the-Shelf Design or Fully Bespoke

The 20 catalogue variants are ready-to-customise starting points: free choice of colours (no imposed palette), addition of sponsor logos or your race number, and your pick of gloss, satin, pearl or chrome finish. Every order goes through a digital proof stage – you sign off the design before production starts, so there are no surprises when the kit arrives. A professional fitting service is also available if you would rather leave the installation to an expert. 20 Variants Available

The catalogue offers 20 design options for the S1000R 2020-2023: racing-inspired colourways drawn from competition, clean monochrome versions, track-focused bold graphics, and stripped-back designs for a pure naked aesthetic. Every variant is fully customisable in colours, logos and finishes, opening up far more combinations than the 20 base designs alone.

Materials and Vinyl

Kits are produced in premium 200-300 micron vinyl from professional-grade brands including 3M, Hexis, Oracal and Avery Dennison. An anti-UV laminate is applied to the surface to protect colours against sun exposure and weathering over time.

Application is done with a squeegee at room temperature – no specialist tools required. The vinyl is removable without leaving residue on a sound surface (non-porous plastic or bodywork). No permanent modification to the bike is needed at any stage.

To customise your lid to match, helmet graphics kits are available using the same made-to-order process.

FAQ – BMW S1000R 2020-2023

Are these kits compatible with all S1000R years from 2020 to 2023?

Yes. The 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 S1000R share the same frame and bodywork panels, so a single template set covers the full generation. The 2024+ update brought bodywork changes that are not covered by these templates.

How does this generation differ from the S1000R 2017-2019?

The 2020-2023 generation shares the S1000RR’s platform: new frame, Euro 5 engine approximately 5 kg lighter than its predecessor, symmetrical LED headlight (replacing the distinctive asymmetric unit), standard colour TFT display and updated electronics. The bodywork geometry changed significantly, making templates from the two generations incompatible with each other.

Do I need a full licence to ride the S1000R 2020-2023, or is it A2-eligible?

A full Category A licence is required. At 165 hp (121 kW), the S1000R 2020-2023 exceeds the A2 power ceiling by a wide margin and cannot be restricted to meet A2 limits.

How many designs are available for this model?

There are 20 catalogue designs for the S1000R 2020-2023. Each one is fully customisable in colours, logos and finishes, which means the actual number of possible combinations goes well beyond the 20 base options.

Can I replicate a factory BMW colour scheme or request something entirely custom?

Both are possible. You can ask for a faithful reproduction of a BMW factory colourway, or build a completely bespoke design from scratch with free colour choices, your own logos and race numbering. The digital proof stage lets you confirm the final look before production in either case.

Are the materials durable and is the vinyl easy to apply?

The 200-300 micron anti-UV laminated vinyl is designed for real-world motorcycle use – sun, rain and regular washing. Application is straightforward with a squeegee and no specialist tools. If you later sell the bike or want a new look, the vinyl peels away cleanly without leaving marks on a sound, non-porous surface.
