The K46 Generation : why the year matters for your graphics kit

What sets the S1000RR 2008-2011 apart

The S1000RR 2008-2011 is the first generation of BMW’s flagship superbike, identified under the K46 fairing code. Its inline four-cylinder engine displaces 999 cc (80.0 mm bore x 49.7 mm stroke), producing 193 hp (142 kW) at 13,000 rpm and 112 Nm of torque at 9,750 rpm, with a rev limiter set at 14,200 rpm. At launch, it was the first production superbike to offer ABS and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) as standard – a genuine breakthrough for 2009-2010. It also holds the distinction of being the first production motorcycle to offer a quickshifter as an option.

Visually, the asymmetric headlight arrangement is the unmistakable signature of this K46 generation: a single spherical projector on the left paired with a larger optical block on the right, required for road homologation. This design was dropped on subsequent generations (2019 onwards), which moved to symmetrical LED units. A graphics kit designed for this generation accounts for every cut line of this specific fairing.

Year compatibility for 2008-2011 : one template, four years

The 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 model years share exactly the same fairing template. The bike was unveiled in Munich in April 2008, a limited run of 1,000 units was produced in 2009 for WSBK homologation, and general sale began in 2010. The 2011 model year is mechanically and visually identical to the 2010 – engine, chassis, suspension and livery all unchanged. The fairing restyling did not arrive until 2012, bringing reshaped side panels, a slimmer tail section and winglets. One kit fits all four years with no modification required.

If your BMW S1000RR is a 2012 or later, the fairing template is different. Check the S1000RR 2015-2018 graphics kit or the S1000RR 2019-2022 graphics kit depending on your year. All available BMW references are listed under BMW graphics kits.

Materials and vinyl

S1000RR 2008-2011 graphics kits are produced in premium calendered vinyl, 200 to 300 microns thick, sourced from recognised manufacturers including 3M, Hexis, Oracal and Avery Dennison depending on the reference. An anti-UV laminate is applied as a topcoat to protect colours against prolonged sun exposure and the elements.

Application is done with a squeegee at room temperature, with no specialist tools required. The vinyl is removable without residue on a sound, uncompromised fairing surface, making a graphic refresh possible without any risk to the original bodywork.

FAQ – BMW S1000RR 2008-2011

Does the graphics kit fit all four years : 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 ?

Yes. All four model years share the same K46 fairing with no structural changes. The cutting template is identical across 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. One kit covers the full range without any modification.

What is the difference between this generation and the S1000RR from 2012 onwards ?

From 2012, BMW redesigned the fairing with reshaped side panels, a slimmer tail section and winglets. The template changes, and kits are not interchangeable between the 2008-2011 generation and later ones. Always confirm your model year before ordering.

Is the S1000RR 2008-2011 eligible for an A2 licence ?

No. The S1000RR 2008-2011 produces 193 hp, well above the power-to-weight ceiling that applies to A2-category motorcycles. It requires a full A licence with no power restrictions.

How many designs are available for this generation ?

13 designs are offered in the catalogue for the S1000RR 2008-2011. Every design is fully customisable in colours, logos, race numbers and finish at the time of order.

Can I recreate the original BMW factory colours, or do I need to go fully custom ?

Both are possible. You can start from a design close to the original livery and adjust individual elements, or go for a completely bespoke layout. A digital proof is submitted for your approval before any production begins.

Will the vinyl remove cleanly without damaging the fairing ?

Yes, provided the fairing surface is in sound condition and not porous. The premium vinyl used is removable with gentle heat and leaves no adhesive residue on a clean surface. If you are unsure about the condition of your fairing, the fitting service team can advise you before installation.
